Update from Africa!

Lucy NM was seen on 13/10/2009 by Mary, who is a representative of The Hotcourses Foundation in Africa. The following report was made:
Lucy is a 13 year old girl in class 7. She goes to Nderi Sacret Heart primary school. She was doing her social studies exam that day. She was number 12 out 20 in her mid term exams. Her best subject is science, and her favourite teacher is Mr. Justus who is her English teacher. She does not play games in school but likes watching football. She lives with her dad and her young brother. She helps her father to wash clothes, clean the utensils and clean the house. Her school has a very good learning environment. Supports disadvantaged children both HIV positive/ AIDS, IDPs (Internally displaced Persons affected by the 2007 post elections) and baby mothers. It’s a Christian school teaching Christian values. They provide breakfast and lunch as well to the children. It mostly relies on well wishers to provide for those orphaned children. Before they admit a child they insist on HIV test so as to know how to handle the children. The school has a children home too. Lucy’s role model was Member of Parliament Prof. George Saitoti when he was the education minister. She would like to be a basketballer when she grows up. She requested for textbooks and exercise books. She will be doing her KCPE exams next year.

Lucy NM is a 15 year old girl. She joined the Lea Toto Program in 2006 and is currently on ARV treatment. She has 2 siblings, 1 older sister and 1 younger brother. 2 children are on the Lea Toto Program and their father is also on ARV treatment. The family is supported by their single father, after their mother passed away. He earns a living doing casual work as a farm labourer growing maize and beans. Lucy has had difficulty hearing in both her ears since she was 3 years old. In December 2008, Lucy was admitted for 1 month in hospital after getting Meningitis.
She loves going to school but due to her hearing problem she has to sit at the front of the class in order to hear the teachers. Her favourite teacher is Teacher Japheth, who teaches Maths, her best subject. Last term she was position 15 out of 24. She would like to be a doctor when she grows up. When free, Lucy likes singing and playing football with her brother.
